ESSENTIALS OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION

Course Description: A challenging 3-day accredited seminar designed to provide investigators “meat and potatoes” techniques to expand their skill set. Course features an innovative learning approach requiring students to work “hands on” through a historically based investigation of fraud, deceit, embezzlement and homicide.

Classroom instruction and practical exercises include:

  • Procedures for managing crime scenes and preparing and executing search warrants.
  • Techniques for case management including how to assess, organize, plan, investigate, and delegate casework.
  • Methods for organizing large volumes of evidence and information to be understandable, workable, retrievable, and courtroom ready.
  • Interview techniques to include preparation, deception detection and stratagem to increase subject cooperation.
  • Application of scientific method and crime scene reconstruction mindset and principles to investigations.
  • Methods for developing a human intelligence base.
  • Instruction for preparing accurate factual reports that will survive courtroom scrutiny.
  • Managing court room testimony

 

Course Requirements:

Course is designed for officers currently working or moving into criminal investigations. Course materials are provided in electronic format.   Attendees should bring an electronic device with USB connection, basic office suite software, and Wi-Fi and download capability, preferably a laptop computer, to access/save handouts, case materials, and fillable forms used in both lecture and practical exercises.
